Abstract
Retropharyngeal abscess (RPA) is uncommon in children. It is a potentially fatal condition, but clinically, it may be easily misinterpreted as croup syndrome. Delayed diagnosis may lead to significant morbidity or even mortality. We report the case of an eight-month-old infant with Enterococcus RPA, who had suffered from fever for 2 weeks, and cyanosis with dyspnea for 2 days. Lateral neck radiography showed no significant findings. Ultrasound revealed a hypoechoic mass with peripheral ring enhancement. Computed tomography scanning confirmed the diagnosis of RPA. We emphasize the importance of ultrasonographic diagnosis of this rare disease in children.
