N2 - Multimedia takes advantage of the rapid developments in signal and information processing, telecommunications, computer engineering, VLSI microelectronics, and consumer electronics. The features, advantages, and limitations of some network technologies for multimedia transport are reviewed. Research and development efforts are described along with results in the big multimedia center on creator-computer-consumer interface, on media interconnection and delivery fabrics, and on distributed media information management. Results on smart-cameras, closed loop tracking, the roles of VLSI within multimedia, and available design options are presented.
