Removal of an undesired component from a valuable product using a rotating packed bed

摘要

Rotating packed beds (RPBs) have been applied to diverse applications, such as distillation, absorption, stripping, and reactive precipitation. However, the feasibility of applying an RPB to product purification processes has seldom been discussed. This paper describes the performance of an RPB toward removing hydrochloric acid from TNPP [tris(nonylphenyl)phosphite] solution and removing unreacted alcohol from an ester product mixture through gas stripping. Preliminary experiments indicate that a lower hydrochloric acid content in the TNPP solution can be achieved using a lower amount of nitrogen at atmospheric pressure. Also, a lower alcohol content in the ester product mixture can be obtained using a lower amount of stripping agent, such as nitrogen and steam under vacuum conditions. Consequently, operating costs and energy consumption are reduced markedly when using the RPB. Therefore, we are convinced that RPBs have great potential for use in product purification processes.
